MANKIND
ROBERT O’HARA
Women are extinct, everyone's gay, abortion is illegal
— and Jason got pregnant.
Women are extinct, everyone's gay, abortion is illegal — and Jason got pregnant. But however unplanned the pregnancy was, nothing could be less expected than the chain of events it would set in motion.
Robert O’Hara’s audacious, hilarious allegory envisions an uncannily familiar future – one where abortion has been universally criminalized and women have gone extinct from centuries of mistreatment. Even the universal homosexuality that’s resulted and man’s new procreative capacity have not stopped them from fucking everything up.
“A daring, topical comedy! The viciousness of Mankind is perhaps its best quality.”
— Jesse Green
“O’Hara parodies man’s imbecility to man, and misogyny isn’t his
only target.”
— Sara Holdren
“Intriguing, clever,
and visually
stunning. ”
— Marilyn Stasio

As we gear up for production, 1 in 3 women in the United States have lost access to abortion care. This is a human rights emergency.
Perhaps you are also feeling overwhelmed and depressed and f*cking hopeless about where we’re headed as a society. Perhaps you, too, have held onto a feeling of cold terror since Roe vs. Wade was overturned in June — and no Brett Kavanaugh or Amy Coney Barrett jokes are helping. You donate, you vote, you join an Auntie network, you get an IUD, you protest…and you don’t know what to do next.
Robert O’Hara’s audacious satire speaks directly to the moment we’re living through. And that doesn’t happen very often in the theatre. He fearlessly tackles the tangled web of religion, politics, and gender issues that brought us here. The near-future dystopia he presents in Mankind is terrifying and comforting in a way that only makes sense when you see it for yourself.
We promise it will make you laugh and make you think. It’s up to you what happens after that.
In solidarity,

"There’s something about theatre where I want to not be able to get up, walk out and go: ‘Oh, that was nice,’ but really have to engage with it as I go home and think about it and work over what I felt about it. That’s the type of theatre I like.”
